Understanding the Mortgage Crisis and the HELOC Freeze

Posted on 23 May 2008 by Jamie Beck

Recently, I’ve posted quite a bit about the driving forces behind the HELOC freeze. Although these explanations can’t change anything, borrowers like to have some idea of why their lenders are acting unusually.

Despite these explanations, a few borrowers want more. We still receive a lot of emails asking questions like “How did this whole HELOC problem begin?” and “Are they really allowed to do this?”

If you want all the details, I’d highly suggest listening to the latest episode of NPR’s This American Life. The episode, called “The Giant Pool of Money,” walks you through the mortgage crisis from start to finish. Show host Ira Glass seems to have a bit of a cold during the taping, but it’s definately worth your time. You can listen to the episode for free on their website.
